It is not that great, it is just fun - finally. I thought Mayer was a jerk wagon jack ass - but that didn't color my appreciation of what he did on stage...and it surprised me how good it was.
I will say it is better than anything else I've seen post Jerry, miles better. I saw Warren really put his heart and soul into it once for about 5 minutes - then he went back to being the replacement Allman Brothers guy - zzzzz. Mayer is putting his all into it, with no regard to the old curmudgeons bitching and whining - that is the biggest difference between D&C and all the other incarnations - the half assed nature of the guitar player filling in for Jerry - they need to jump off the high wire w/o a net, really w/o the net, let it crash and burn once in a while as they try something they're pretty sure won't work, but if it does it will be grand- that to me is GD music. Not practiced and safe and well choreographed - that is what all the other R&R acts do and it is BORING!!!!!!!!!
D&C is most certainly not Grateful Dead, even the shows I saw in 93-95 kick the living shit out of this stuff...hell even the shows from my least favorite era (88-92) were better than D&C. That said I don't listen to any recordings past fall '83 except to investigate some faded memory.
